Who is Wesley Bell? Wesley Bell is an American politician and attorney who presenly serves as the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney in Missouri. In addition, he was elected in 2018 under Democratic Party making him one of the first African Americans to hold the role.

Bell announced his candidacy for the 2024 United States Senate election in Missouri on June 7, 2023. Having a change of mind, the American attorney decided to run for the U.S. House seat of Missouri’s 1st congressional district, defeating his competitor Cori Bush in the Democratic primary in August 2024.

When discussing his family background, Bell was born to both of his parents in 1974 and was raised in northern St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. His dad is a police officer while his mum works as a civil servant.

When discussing his academic background, Bell attended Hazelwood East High School for his High School level. Upon completing High School, he proceeded to Lindenwood University, and University of Missouri School of Law.

Career and Public Life

Following his graduation from law school, his first job was a St. Louis County public defender. Moreover, the American attorney was appointed to be a municipal court judge in Velda City and municipal prosecutor in Riverview. He also worked at Florissant Valley Community College as a professor in the criminology department.

According to reports, Wesley managed the campaign of Mark J. Byrne, a Republican candidate challenging Lacy Clay’s seat in Missouri’s 1st congressional district in 2006. Byrne campaigned on a conservative platform, which included a firm stance against abortion.

After the Ferguson protests, he was elected to Ferguson city council, beating out Lee Smith, a first time candidate popular among Ferguson protestors back in 2015.

He then ran for county prosecutor in 2018. He campaigned on a platform advocating for community-based policing, appointing special prosecutors for police-related homicides, pledging to avoid pursuing the death penalty, reforming cash bail and bond systems, and other progressive initiatives.

Because he was determined to his goals, he received support from local and national activists and advocacy groups.

Legal Proceedings Over Allegations of Sexual Relations with Multiple Subordinates

One of Bell’s prosecutors Susan Petersen, filed a lawsuit under Missouri’s Human Rights Act claiming that Bell had fired her and forced out five other female attorneys in favor of male employees.

The lawsuit also claimed that Bell had fostered a hostile work environment for female attorneys in the office. In his response, Wesley stated that the prosecutor’s attorney was irresponsibly and unethically attempting to litigate her case in the media.

On June 27, 2024, Circuit Judge Bruce F. Hilton ordered that Bell must respond to deposition questions regarding sexual relations between a supervisor and several subordinates in his office. The judge also rejected the county’s request to postpone the Petersen trial.
