Monique Angela Hicks famously known by her stage name Mo’Nique, is an American stand-up comedian, businesswoman, and actress.

Angela is best known for her work in stand-up comedy, debuting as a member of The Queens of Comedy.

In addition, Mo’Nique received a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album back in 2002.

She made appearances in mainstream film and television having a starring role as Nicole “Nikki” Parker in the UPN series The Parkers (1999–2004), as well as appearing in Phat Girlz (2006) and Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins (2008).

In a similar manner to any other individual belonging to the black community, Mo’Nique tackles race issues in her stand-up routines, for instance at the Montreal Just For Laugh Festival in 2000: “White and black people, we’re just mad at each other, we don’t know why we’re mad at each other.

She played a significant role in Tony Scott’s thriller Domino, co-starring Keira Knightley and Mickey Rourke in 2005. Additionally, she landed the starring role in Phat Girlz, a comedy focusing on a hopeful fashion designer experiencing challenges in her quest for love and recognition in 2006.

As a significance of its success, the film earned back its $3 million production cost in its first weekend of release.

She previously worked as a customer service representative at the phone company MCI in Hunt Valley, Maryland. Her first comedy show performance was at the downtown Baltimore Comedy Factory Outlet.

According to reports, Mo’Nique’s father, Steven Imes Jr., worked as a drug counselor while her mother was an engineer. Hicks is the youngest of four children. In a 2008 interview with Essence magazine, she disclosed that she had been a victim of sexual abuse by her brother Gerald from the ages of 7 to 11.

Eventually, he was convicted of abusing another girl and sentenced to 12 years in prison. Following the birth of her twin boys in 2005, Mo’Nique decided to sever all ties with Gerald.
