Lizzie Wanyoike born ( Lizzie Muthoni Wanyoike ) was a Kenyan businesswoman, entrepreneur, educator and philanthropist best known as founder and chief executive officer of the Nairobi Institute of Business Studies (NIBS).
Unfortunately, Wanyoike succumbed at the age of 73 years old on 14th January 2024 after loosing battle to cancer. Lizzie got her first job as a secondary school teacher at State House Girls’ School in Nairobi where she earned a monthly salary of KSh 961 (approx. US$140 at that time) in 1972.
In the year 1975, Lizzie discovered that working for someone else was not her calling. They founded Nairobi-based Temple College of Secretarial Studies with her husband and other business associates.
During her time at Temple College of Secretarial Studies, she worked as a Principal and instructor. Lizzie later approached the Temple management with ideas about expanding the course menu, as well as increasing student intake, but unfotunately, the management rejected her proposals.
In the year 1999, she quit Temple and established NIBS with her savings of around of KSh6 million (US$60,000) and a bank loan from Equity Bank Kenya Limited, worth KSh4 million (US$40,000).
