Boniface Mwangi is a Kenyan-born politician, influencer, photojournalist, and activist best known for his social-political activism.
In addition, Mwangi is famously known for his images of the post-election violence that hit Kenya in 2007 and 2008. Mwangi’s first initiative was the project Picha Mtaani, Swahili for “photos in the street”, showing photographs of the violence in 2007 after the national elections, between the different tribes.
At 17 years old, Mwangi faced the harsh reality of his mother’s passing and had to navigate life on the streets. Seeking stability, Boniface enrolled in a Bible school with aspirations of becoming a pastor, and earning a diploma in biblical studies. It was during this time that his interest in photography developed, inspired by the work of Kenyan photographer Mohamed Amin.

Even though he didn’t attend secondary school, he managed to gain a place at a private journalism school. He sponsored his studies by selling books on the streets of Nairobi but soon began to gain experience as a photojournalist. He published photographs in the national newspaper The Standard and won his first photography prize in 2005.

Family and Early Life
When discussing his family life, Mwangi is the son of Wakiuru wa Mahinge ( mother ), who was a business woman who traded mainly across the border. Unfortunately, his father’s whereabouts have not been disclosed to the public thus making it impossible to tell his name or profession.
Mwangi relocated with his mother to Nairobi’s low-income suburb of Ngara in Nairobi, then to a high-rise in Majengo, followed by Githurai 45, before finally settling in Pangani. During this time, Mwangi frequently dropped in and out of school and assisted his mother in selling books.
According to reports, Mwangi’s mother, Wakiuru wa Mahinge, passed away in the year 2000 due to unknown reasons. Following his mother’s sudden death, Mwangi relocated to Nyeri, Central Kenya to live with his grandparents. During that time, Mwangi was just six years old.
